Can we play this from home?

This guide is designed to be enjoyed on location to help you explore the city. For most of the puzzles, you need to find something in the local surroundings to get the right answer. Trying to solve it remotely won’t break anything — it just won’t be as much fun.

How many people can play?

For this game, a team of 2-4 is ideal, teams of 5-6 work at a push

You need a minimum of two phones, both fully charged and connected to mobile data.

• Player 1 runs the main guide and puzzles (this screen).
• Player 2 will need to open the companion page to complete some of the puzzles

How long does it take?

Most teams take around 60–90 minutes, but there’s no time pressure.

Take breaks, stop for a coffee, pause and resume later — it’s designed to fit around your day, not the other way around.

How do we save our progress?

Player 1 – We give save codes at checkpoints, we recommend taking a screenshot. You’ll be prompted to do this in game as well. If you stop playing at any time, enter your resume code on the first page of the game, or the homepage of our website (lanewaymysteries.com) to return to your last checkpoint

Player 2 – simply save the URL of your companion page, and return to it any time

When’s the best time to do it?

Best enjoyed during the day or in particular early evening.

You can do it at night, but some “look closely” challenges are harder in low light.

What should we bring?

We recommend:

• Two fully charged phones with mobile data
• Comfy walking shoes
• Glasses if you wear them
• A battery pack
• Water and sun protection

You won’t need to enter any buildings, but please be aware of roads, cyclists, and your surroundings.

What if we can’t find the answer?

If you’re stuck:

1. Use a couple of hints.
2. Tap Reveal Answer.
3. Enter it and continue.

No judgement — the goal is enjoyment, not perfection.

What if we have technical issues?

If you tap a button and nothing happens:

• It’s almost always a signal issue.
• Walk a few metres, and try again.
• Refresh the page if needed

Worst case scenario, go to resume game (your game link or on the homepage) and use your checkpoint save code

I’m here for the puzzles. Do I really need to read the story and historic facts?

You’ll need information from the story, this is a whodunnit.

The history facts are totally optional and completely skippable. There’s nothing hidden in them and nothing you need to remember later

Do I need sound on?

You can tap buttons to hear the clues instead of reading them. If you prefer to read everything, no problem, there’s nothing extra hidden in the audio clips

How precise do we need to be with locations?

For each puzzle, you are taken to a very specific location via Google Maps.

All answers will be visible from somewhere that’s within about 20 metres of the stated location. You may need to move and look around for a clue, a code, etc — that’s part of the fun.

What if something seems out of date?

Let us know.

If you spot a clue that no longer exists and we verify it, we’ll give you a free hunt of your choice as a thank you.
